In 1970, the first World Series of Poker (WSOP) was held at Binion's Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas USA. The tournament had been steadily growing in size until 2003, when an online player named Chris Moneymaker won a seat to the tournament through the online poker room, PokerStars. Mr. Moneymaker finished the tournament in first place, garnering the 2.5 million dollar first prize.
The following year, the tournament boomed, when another online player from PokerStars, Greg Raymer, repeated Moneymakers' performance.
Since then, the tournament has expanded to include the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE), which was initially won by Norwegian online player Annette Obrestad. Obrestad was not allowed to compete in the WSOP because she was merely 19...too young to participate in the American tournament.
